Tissue Paper Pom Pom Garland tutorial

This pom pom tissue paper garland is a great way to use up extra tissue paper kicking around the house and is a fun craft project for any party that can be made with the kids… and can be created with whatever colours you like!

Charles didn’t want ANY decorations for his Cinco de Mayo-inspired birthday.  Apparently I’m not a good listener lol.  But seriously, it was his 45th birthday and I wanted to still create a fun colourful space (he jokes about my very white decor pallet all of the time). In addition to the few cacti, a plastic skeleton (complete with a sombrero), and a tequila bar, we created this tissue paper pom pom garland! It added a pop of colour that really tied the room together and was simple to make.

Mixed Citrus Margarita on the Rocks

I’m not gonna lie, it took a few tries to get it right.  But once you’re past the learning curve of your first couple tissue paper pom poms, it starts moving a lot quicker! I’d estimate around an hour from start to finish, making it the perfect afternoon craft with friends… you may want to consider making some of these Mixed Citrus Margaritas (pictured above) should you be making these for Cinco de Mayo… just saying.

You can re-use old tissue paper from presents (I keep mine!) or it’s available at most stores that have party decorations (including dollar stores)! If you don’t want to attach the tissue paper flowers to a string garland, they look pretty just sitting on your mantle or as a table centrepiece. You can also experiment with the size of your tissue paper flowers by cutting the tissue paper sheets into smaller rectangles.

Materials Needed

  • tissue paper
  • scissors
  • twine

To create the tissue paper flowers

  1. Lay out 10 sheets of tissue paper on a large flat surface.  Cut the paper in half length-ways for smaller pom poms.
  2. Fold the tissue paper, starting from the short edge, accordion style.
  3. Once the full sheet of paper has been folded, trim each exposed edge in a semi circle using scissors.
  4. Tie the centre of the tissue paper sheet tightly with twine. Tie a second piece of twine around the first piece (threading through the centre) to create a very small loop you can use to thread the tissue paper flower onto the your garland.   The second circle of twine only needs to be big enough to thread the garland string through.
  5. Fan out each side of the tissue paper so your accordion folds are separated.
  6. Begin pulling apart each layer of tissue paper, as far apart from the other layers as possible. This worked best for us if we placed the tissue paper pom pom between our knees! Be patient and gentle with these to ensure the tissue paper layers don’t tear.
  7. Continue pulling apart layers until you have your tissue paper pom pom!

To create your garland

  1. Measure the length of twine needed for garland according to where you’d like to hang it! We used approximately 14 feet of twine to hand garland across the window behind our Cinco de Mayo table.
  2. Tie twine to the loop you previously created on your tissue paper pom pom, repeating with each pom pom spaced approximately one foot apart.
  3. Hang the garland across desired wall or window by tying each end to something (we used our curtain rod) to secure it.

Good luck my friends, have FUN and tag me on Instagram if you try them out!
