5 Reasons You Should Get a Better Sleep from Tori Wesszer of Fraiche Nutrition and a Review of The Endy Mattress

If you follow me on social media you’ll know that I decided to test-drive the new Endy mattress, sheets and pillows back in February in pursuit of a better nights’ sleep.  I can hear the parents all chuckle in unison… sleep?  With kids?  Good luck lady!  While there is some truth to this (Max just started sleeping through the night, it’s a whole new world!), finding a comfortable mattress that lets you sleep when your kids do is SO IMPORTANT!

Let’s talk about sleep.   I’ll be the first to admit that sleep isn’t my strongest suit in the wellness department.  I’ve been known to work too late (sometimes in bed to make it worse), get up too early, and be the first one to bolt (usually unnecessarily) out of bed at the first peep my kids make, all things that I’m working hard to correct. The reality is that we all need 7-8 hours of sleep a night to function at our best (but no more than 9 hours a night for the record).  There is a SMALL subset of the population who can get away with less, but there isn’t a work-around for the rest of us mere mortals.

Without enough sleep our bodies silently unravel. If being grumpy isn’t enough to make you want more sleep here are a few other reasons you really do need to get a SOLID 7-8 hours of sleep a night!

  1. Focus, Learning and Memory:  We all know that it’s hard to focus and learn when we are sleep deprived. What’s more surprising is that it is just as important to get a good night’s sleep after learning something new in order to process and retain the information that has been learned.
  2. Emotions:  I’m emotional enough on my own, the last thing I need is to be sleep deprived on top of it!  A lack of sleep makes the amygdala (the centre of the brain that controls emotion) unable to regulate emotions.  Well there you have it, blame it on the good ol’ amygdala.
  3. Brain Detox: Our bodies simply can’t repair themselves and function properly without sufficient sleep and our brains are the most highly impacted.  Our brains flush out toxins during sleep using a plumbing system called the glymphatic system (the rest of our body does this through our lymphatic system, but our brains have this separate system that only functions when we sleep).  So basically, sleep cleans out the brain.
  4. Weight loss and metabolism: Without sleep your metabolism doesn’t work properly.  In fact, if you’re looking to achieve a healthy body weight, start with getting enough sleep! Our bodies metabolize and store carbohydrates more efficiently when we are well rested and important hormones that control our appetites are affected with a lack of sleep.
  5. Disease Prevention: A lack of sleep, especially on a regular basis, is associated with long-term health consequences, including chronic medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease, and that these conditions may lead to a shortened life expectancy.  Yikes!

Knowing the importance of sleep, my hubby Charles and I were bent on finding a great mattress that worked for both of us.  We are built just a bit differently to say the least!  Charles is a big guy, 230 pounds and 6’2″ and has a very physical job.  I, on the other hand, am a small gal who either cooks or sits at a computer every day, which takes a different type of toll on the body.

Here are the criteria that we judged it on:

Ease of Assembly: The mattresses, pillows and sheets come neatly packaged in boxes and arrive at your doorstep. Which means no wrestling massive mattresses trying to get them home from the store.  Which is always fun, right?  Not.  All you do is open the box and put it on the bed.  Oh yeah, super obvious but open the box in the room that you’re putting the mattress in (unless you want to turn your front entrance into a play centre like we did lol!) – clearly we are speaking from experience.

Firmness: The mattresses are firm but not too firm; there is just enough give to form to your body without you sinking into the mattress.  Charles has a really tough time finding a comfortable bed and typically finds that his circulation in one part of his body is cut off at some point during the night, which clearly isn’t comfortable!  In his words “I feel more supported and my legs don’t go numb: I get a better sleep”. He couldn’t sleep on his back on the old bed (which was still a very good bed for the record), his left leg would go numb half-way through the night.  Enough said. One thing that I will say is that the bed isn’t as cozy as a traditional pillow-top mattress … since there’s no pillow-top!

Weight Transfer: I love that I can’t feel a thing when Charles rolls over in bed. I mean, aside from the fact that he rips the blankets off of me to stuff between his legs (thanks honey), you can’t feel motion on other parts of the bed which is really nice!  Same thing when Charlie crawls into bed half way through the night (40% of the time for the record… but I wouldn’t change a thing, one day he won’t want to cuddle with his mom).  The Endy mattresses area also designed to help control body temperature if that’s important to you.

Guest Reviews:  Charles and I are only two people, and a study of two isn’t AS awesome as a study of, well, more!  We used our guests as guinea pigs (blinded, well kind of, they didn’t know they were in our little ‘study’), and they ALL raved about their sleep!

Non-Toxic Materials: All foam used in making Endy products doesn’t contain harmful chemicals found in other foam products: no formaldehyde, phthalates, or flame retardants.

Adjustable Pillows: We’ve spent a small fortune on pillows trying to find the perfect height.  People go out of their way to ridicule me actually for how many pillows we have on our bed!  These Endy pillows are genius.  One pillow that you can make as firm or as soft as you want by simply adding or removing handfuls of stuffing from the inside.  Love it (and yeah, they’re super comfortable).

100 Day Trial: A no-hassel money back guarantee is offered for the mattresses so if you don’t like them, no sweat!  If for any reason it’s not working out, you can just let Endy know within your trial time and they’ll offer a free, full-service pickup and process a full refund, no questions asked.  So there’s zero risk in trying it out.

How to adjust the Endy adjustable pillow

We received the Endy mattresses (one king for our room and two queen beds for our guest rooms), pillows and sheets in February and promptly unrolled them to put them on our box spring.  Ok, so here’s the thing.  We put it on our bed the very first night that we received it and weren’t thrilled with our first night’s sleep.  We realized that the mattress really needed to decompress after being rolled up in the box; it took a few days for it to work its magic and fluff out.  Once it had a chance to regain its shape we were thrilled with the mattress!  Charles and I love it and so do our guests!

    Hi Tori,
was waiting to see how you liked the Endy mattress….. 🙂 glad to hear you love it, will give it a try within the next month!

  2. Lauren

Loved the review thanks Tori! We found the exact same thing you did. The mattress seemed like a let down when it first unraveled and I was disappointed with my sleep the first night, it was terrible super uncomfortable, but night 2 was a whole new experience! The bed finished filling out and I refuse to sleep on anything else now! 😂 we love how firm, but not too firm it is. My hubby had the same numbness as your hubby. And now he has the best sleep ever. We had a crazy expensive mattress before and I was the only one who slept well on it. So I’m grateful we finally have something we can both have a good sleep on. I also love how economical it is! Lots of love, have a great summer 😄❤️

Thanks for the review Tori! I’ve seen tons of ads for the mattress and have been wondering if it is actually as great as they have been making it sound. A good nights sleep feels so good, I would go quite far to get one! Any feedback on the sheets?

Thank you for the honest review. My husband has been researching this mattress for us to get once we complete our relocation to Alberta next month. We are both heavier than we would like to be and we have read that this mattress was supportive for folks on the heavier side as well. We will test this out to find out. Curious to see how more supportive it gets the healthier and lighter I get!

I love your padded charcoal headboard! It’s the exact headboard I’ve been looking for… Where is it from? Did you get it here in Kelowna?

My husband and I are on week three of our Endy mattress and we don’t like it. It is much too firm for us. We find it doesn’t give enough where we need it to, putting pressure on hips, shoulders, etc. I have had horrible back pain since night 3 on it (we actually really liked it night 1 and 2 before it firmed up!). I’m a lightweight, but my hubby is of average build at 200 lbs.
To each their own, but I’m amazed at how many people love this mattress…I guess we’re among the few that don’t! 🙂

    Hey Tori!

Are you still happy with your Endy Mattress? My boyfriend and I are considering getting one for our bedroom but for us it’s an investment so I wanted to see if it was still doing the trick for you two.

    1. Tori Wesszer

Hi Erin! Yes we are – I’ll admit my husband is the most in love. He has had back problems for years and this mattress is the only one that makes his back feel better! I admit that I miss the fluffiness of the regular mattress as this doesn’t have a pillow top but it’s otherwise good! Hope this helps, Tori

I love my Endy💜 I have been enjoying it since it arrived on June 26th. I truly do sleep better and my hips and back are not sore anymore when I wake up!
Once I have my Kingsize paid off (only a couple more payments) then I’m going to order my 5yr old daughter a queen size to replace the old mattress she has. Now that she has started kindergarten having a good nights sleep is even more important. That and she always finds her way to my bed during the night because she likes my bed better, it more comfy she says lol

I’ve looked at this mattress at a local furniture shop and truly contemplated getting it. I have the pillow all ready and it’s been good so far. I’m a person who loves a real cloud like mattress, has anyone put a foam topper over there Endy or tried it? I know Tori you said it wasn’t as cozy as a pillow top because it wasn’t one, but wondering if that would make a little difference. Plus are you still using the mattress now and your thoughts on as it has been quite some time now since posting the blog.

    1. Tori Wesszer

Hi Jessie! Thanks for the note. If you like a cloud like mattress I’m not sure this is for you to be honest: it’s quite firm and supportive, no real cushy feel. I don’t know if a pillow top would negate the support of the bed? It’s a good question! My thoughts haven’t changed in that I think it’s a great mattress but it depends on what you’re looking for in a bed!

I have been considering this mattress for abit now. I’ve read all the reviews, did the research and it sounds great! I bought a brand new spring mattress last January and find it’s not as firm as I was hoping. It’s a beautiful mattress from a great company but I wake up every day with back pain, can’t sleep through the night and have anxiety when it’s bed time knowing I won’t sleep well unless I’m so tired out from my day. I need to know if it really is as firm as you say?! I can’t afford to invest in another mattress again, dislike it and go through this process again.

    1. Tori Wesszer

      Hi Natasha,

It is a really firm mattress – I think it may fit what you are looking for (of course it’s really personal) but the good news is that it’s totally returnable if you don’t like it! Take care, Tori

    Hi Tori!

I love this review! All good things to consider when purchasing! Do you plan on doing a full home tour? I’d love to see more in depth on your floor plan!

    Thanks so much!

    Hi Tori
My husband and I were wondering if you can move comfortably on this mattress. We purchased the memory foam mattress paid a fortune for it and had to send it back within a week it was horrible. If you wanted to turn you literally had to lift yourself up to turn around on your side. Also can u use normal sheets on this bed?

    1. Tori Wesszer

Hi Anna it’s a great question. Yes you can indeed move comfortably, it’s not like the memory foam you know. And yes, regular sheets fit on it! I hope this helps!

  13. Jean

I’ve really been considering getting an Endy, but I’m a little nervous since I have rheumatoid arthritis and wondering if this mattress might be too firm. My body gets very achy at night. I’ve read a lot of reviews but didn’t see any with issues such as mine so what do you think?

    1. Tori Wesszer

Hi Jean. Finding a good mattress that works is super personal – it’s hard to say. But I will say that it is firm but does ‘give’ to your body without making an indent in the mattress which is key as it is much different than memory foam. The good thing is that you can order it, try it out, and return it with no hassle if it doesn’t work out so it would be worth a try! I hope it works for you! Tori

    1. Tori Wesszer

Hi Kim yes I did and loved them. They are made from a very durable cotton and have a really strong elastic at the bottom of the fitted sheet to actually keep it on the bed for a change! I hope this helps. Tori

  14. Kaitlin

Hi! Did you guys use a regular bed frame and box spring or did you purchase their bed frame?! Not sure if it will be different if we buy a store bought frame and their mattress?!
