Mixed Citrus Margarita

Mixed Citrus Margarita on the Rocks

The weather is warming up, our backyard is almost complete … AND Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner.  This calls for a margarita, si?  Keep reading for the most amazing, fresh, naturally sweetened margarita that will have you trading in that bottled neon marg mix for life!

Store bought margarita mix is often filled with sugar and artificial flavours, so I wanted to provide you with a simple margarita recipe that is filled with freshly squeezed mixed citrus … giving you a dreamy, pretty margarita that tastes so much better!

A couple of things before you dust off that citrus reamer and warm up your juicing arm.  First, choose a good quality tequila. There are several different types of 100% agave tequila including silver, gold, reposado, añejo, extra añejo. Gold tequila is preferred for mixed drinks but I tried this with silver tequila and it was still delicious! Silver tequila will provide a little stronger of a tequila flavour while gold tequila is smoother.

Second, fresh citrus and a variety of citrus really make this cocktail shine.  We went to town and just picked up a whole bunch of different oranges and grapefruits – so much fun to make!  If you are wanting a pink citrus margarita just add a bit of the blood orange juice and voila!  Of course, you can use any salt you want, but since Himalayan sea salt is pink… of course that’s the one I chose!

Rimming your citrus margarita glasses with Himalayan salt before serving adds another layer of flavour while eliminating some of the sweetness of the cocktail. If you prefer your margaritas without salt, simply skip the step of rimming your glass!

Mixed Citrus Margarita

This Mixed Citrus Margarita is the perfect drink for spring or summer (or any time of year really). The complex flavours from the fruit make this margarita akin to something you'd order on the beach in Mexico.

Ingredients

Margarita

  • 4 ounces tequila
  • 3 ounces fresh citrus juice*
  • 1 ounce agave syrup
  • 1 ounce Triple Sec

To Serve

  • 1 teaspoon Himalayan sea salt
  • 2 wedges lime
  • ice

Instructions

  1. First, prepare your glasses for your margaritas. In a shallow dish or plate add sea salt. Rub the lime wedges on the edges of the margarita glasses, then dip edges in the Himalayan salt to coat the rim.

  2. Add fresh citrus juice, tequila, triple sec, and agave to a shaker bottle over one handful of ice.

  3. Shake for approximately 10 seconds.

  4. Divide evenly between the rimmed glasses filled with ice.

  5. Serve immediately with a slice of lime.

Recipe Notes

*I used blood oranges, grapefruits, and limes. The blood orange will create a pinker colour as opposed to orange.
